Outside The Line

In the animal kingdom, it is often males that are the ones to “peacock”, attracting female counterparts with vibrant feathers or fur. In fashion, these roles are often reversed, with females donning the colorful wardrobes. This season, beauty follows suit, with a selection of rainbow brights.

Women are asserting their position as trailblazing professionals, breaking down “boys club” barriers. As confident leaders, they celebrate female strength and dare to be bold in all areas of their lives. As such, color becomes a symbol of this female force, with daring faces mirroring these fearless attitudes.

Traditional application rules are left behind, with colors mixing like an artist’s palette. The more saturated the better! Makeup is applied in a more haphazard style, letting creativity come out to play, with free form shapes blocked out around the eye. Lips, too, see an influx of standout shades, with brightly saturated pouts talking the talk.

Blush Flush

Our hyper connected world keeps us in the know 24/7. As brilliant as it is to experience your best friend’s trip to Paris virtually, we all reach a saturation point and crave the opportunity to reconnect with the natural world.
This season, the desire gives rise to an outdoorsy look. Even if you’re not getting out to that cottage in the woods, your complexion will make it seem like you are! A distinct flush of blush gives the illusion of a healthy dose of fresh air, appeasing our inner environmentalista. Touches of peach and coral light up apples of the cheeks, playing up the “flawless face” we’ve all been working overtime to achieve.

To the Tune of Brun

With a nod to the earthy tones popular at the end of the last century, rich brick-y browns make a return to the beauty palette. In line with the season’s fashion inspiration – a combination of 70’s and 90’s silhouettes and colors – rusty raisin and tawny hues are revived.

These modern incarnations take on deeper tones than seen in previous decades, but maintain the same moody attitude that popularized these shades. After seasons of bright, clean color, the return of these terracotta hues injects a grunge appeal, adding a dirty pretty edge to modern makeup. Lips look luxe in deep matte finishes, while the eyes take on an element of mystery with pearl shadows swiped across lids. Nails accentuate those high-waisted flares, with lustrous polishes in auburn shades.

The Dark Side

Things take a darker turn with shadowy midnight hues, creating dramatic looks that call attention to the face. Clean, angular lines around the eyes provide a dramatic counter balance to the softer fabric textures of the season. The cat eye gets an adventurous update, gaining dimension with double lines and bold shapes traced on the outer corners of the lid. The water line becomes a key area of focus, with smudged black liner defining bottom lashes. This dark movement also appears on nails, in slick varnishes. The most daring innovators use this look to perfectly define the lips in a variety of finishes, from matte dark berry stains to glossy obsidian pouts.
