The Importance of Social Media During These Challenging Times

Human connection. It’s what we all yearn for. Through our connectedness we have the ability to inspire change and build trust. Although our current predicament has placed limits on the ways we can connect with one another, it hasn’t altered our ability to do so.

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, Social Media harnessed the power to bring us together, irrespective of distance and time zone. The period we are living through right now, however, is forcing us – and by us, I mean everyone – to shift our focus and place emphasis on those around us and build our digital communities, so we can continue to be there for each other.

Now more than ever, it is important that we stick together and uplift one another. During these times of isolation, it is our communities that will see us through – it is our common humanity.

Brands, such as The Body Shop and Farmacy, have already done this – leveraging social media to reach out to their audience and letting them know that they are there and what they are doing.

To help you move forward during these unprecedented times, The Red Tree Team has put together a few tips on how you can use social media so that you can continue to grow and build your communities.

01

Understand your audience

Find out what platforms your audience predominantly use and start building your presence there. Discover what content your audience wants to see from you during this time and do that. As we are living through uncertain times, some people may be using social media as an outlet to rid them of their worries, while others may be using it to stay informed. This brings us to tip two.

02

Generate useful content

People are spending all of their time at home. Think about what content you can share that can help them make use of their time while staying true to your brand and your identity. Also use relevant hashtags so people looking for your products or services can easily find them.

03

  • Set the right tone

Stay true to your identity and remember to be empathetic. Understand that many individuals are struggling at the moment, and that it is never the right time to make light of this situation.

04

Engage

Self-isolation can be lonely and more people are spending time on social media to get a dose of the human connection that they currently are missing, so make sure to engage with your audience. Answer their comments and DMs, host live chats, upload videos and, most importantly, be present.

05

Get familiar with analytical tools

Set KPIs and find out your best times to post. Pinpoint what content resonates the most with your audience and understand the overall impact of your social media performance.
